Type: Individual
ELIGIBILITY: The participant may not have previously competed in this event at the national level.
OVERVIEW: This event consists of three (3) parts: material submission prior to the conference (cover letter and resume), a job application, and an interview.
SECTION: Each local chapter may enter two (2) members. FINALISTS: A maximum of ten (10) individuals based on preliminary materials will be notified and scheduled for a ten (10 minute interview at the section conference.
STATE: A maximum of the top two (2) places from the section competition will represent their section at the State Leadership conference. FINALISTS: Twelve (12) finalists (2 from each section) will be qualified for an interview at SLC. Preliminary materials must be turned in by the deadline to be eligible for a ten (10 minute interview at SLC. Failure to submit preliminary materials will forfeit participation in this event.
NATIONAL: The top four(4) places in the state competition will represent California at the National Leadership Conference. NOTE: Some SLC top-10 finalists will become eligible for the national conference as a result of drops. Make sure you get early approval from your parents to attend the National Conference so you will be in a position to say "yes" to your adviser if you are "bumped up".
SKILLS: This event recognizes FBLA members who demonstrate proficiency in applying for employment in business.
Cover Letter (one-page): Each competitor must apply for a business or business-related job at Merit Corporation (a fictitious company) in Washington, D.C. Company benefits include paid holidays and vacation, sick leave, a retirement plan, and health insurance. Salary will be commensurate with experience and education. - The job must be one for which the competitor is now qualified or he/she will be qualified for at the completion of the current school year. It may be a part-time, internship, or full-time job.
- Résumé (not to exceed two pages): Highlight your work/volunteer experience.
Submission of prejudged materials: Deadline is 11:59 pm on January 15 for section conference and 11:59 pm on March 19 for state conference. Failure to submit materials on time or failure to register in this event will forfeit your participation in this event. See Competitive Events Overview for access to submission forms.
Judges: A panel of judges will use the rating sheets to score competitors. The materials score will be added to the rating sheet and will be used to break ties. All decision of judges are final.
